Hybrid Magic

Hybrid Magic - s.jpg

Hybrid Magic is a middle grade fantasy about young mages trying to figure out how to use their powers, and how to stay alive. Aaron, Elara and Theo are hybrid mages. In a world where most people only have one type of magic - Combat, Healing, Transformation or Sight - those who have more than one are rare, and are known as “hybrids”. Since hybrid mages are so unique, some consider them to be unnatural, maybe even dangerous. A group of assassins calling themselves the “Defenders” are out to hunt down and kill all hybrid mages and Aaron and his friends must find a way to survive long enough to learn how to use their hybrid abilities.

I really enjoyed the world of Hybrid Magic. There is a lot of history and lore in this world, and it feels like this book has just scratched the surface, which makes me excited for the future. I enjoyed reading about each of the three main characters, who all have their own interesting backstories and abilities, and bring something different to the narrative. My favorite of the young hybrid mages was actually Theo. Not only does he have a great backstory, with a complicated family, but he also has a personal connection to the Defenders which has a really important impact towards the end of the book.

My only non-complaint is that I wanted to know more about each of the character’s relationships. Since this book is for younger readers it doesn’t go that deep into some of the interpersonal relationships between the characters, which I would have liked to have seen more of. But, the book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger which means that there will hopefully be more books in the future, and more opportunities to build on everything that happened here.

Overall, Hybrid Magic was a cute and cozy read that’s perfect for young readers, but can still be enjoyed by readers of all ages.
