As Far As You’ll Take Me
As Far As You’ll Take Me is a coming of age tale about finding out who you are, and where you belong. Meet Marty, a young boy leaving his life in rural Kentucky behind to start a new one in London. As if being gay in a close minded town wasn’t enough, Marty’s anxiety has held him back from living his best life. When Marty arrives in London he’ll have a whole new set of problems - lying to his aunt about why he’s really there, trying to make new friends who actually understand him, and the devilishly handsome Pierce, who may not be as charming as he seems.
I absolutely loved Marty. I’ve never felt I had so much in common with a gay teenage boy… the way he makes lists in his head, the things he finds funny, the thoughts he has about his new crush… I really felt like I was on Marty’s journey with him and I felt my heart break for him at times, I cheered for him, and I yelled at him when he made stupid decisions. The adult part of my brain did find some aspects of the story hard to believe (like you can’t just stay in another country indefinitely), but I was able to look past most of those things.
No matter what your age or orientation, Marty’s story is a universal tale of love and acceptance, and anyone can relate to that.
