Red Queen

Red Queen is a YA Fantasy set in a world where people are divided by the color of their blood. Mare Barrow and her family have red blood, and are nothing like the silver-blooded, who use their supernatural powers to rule over the reds. When Mare discovers a power of her own, a power no red should have, she’s forced to pretend to be a Silver, and betrothed to one of their princes. But, Mare’s new position allows her the opportunity to pit Silver against Red, Prince against Prince, and Mare’s head against her heart.

I really liked the set-up of the Silver and the Reds. Even though the economic disparity trope has been used many times before, I think the story did a good job of showing not everyone and everything is black and white, and that anyone can betray anyone.

What this book did not do a good job of though, was the romance. Mare being loved by not one, but two princes, and her childhood friend was a bit much, even with the great twist at the end. Red Queen is a very YA tale, but great world-building and complex characters were enough to make me want to keep reading, and find out what happens next.
