The Last Continent

The Unseen University is in danger its librarian is sick and constantly changes his shape. He is the only one that is capable of traversing in the library and staying alive, as a result of his sickness, students and professors cannot borrow books.A rescue team is formed of the Universities staff (Archchancellor Ridcully, the Bursar, The Lecturer in Recent Runes, The Dean of Pentacles, The Senior Wrangler and Ponder Stibbons), they come up with a way to cure the librarian by casting a spell and changing him back to his human form. All that they need to do this is his real name. Unfortunately the only person that knows the name of this orangutan librarian is Rincewind which currently is missing, and lost on the last continent named XXXX.

Meanwhile, Rincewind meets Scrappy a kangaroo sent by the creator of the last continent, to fix the weather, which by some strange circumstances does not produce rain. (Everyone on the XXXX knows that water cannot come from the sky, it must be mined from the ground).

The continent that Pratchett presents is very similar to Australia, if somebody read books about it, or lives on it, he (or she) will haven even more fun reading this novel. As all of Discworld book, this one ca be read without the knowledge from other books (although it would be better to read at least some books about the Unseen University staff). There is a noticeable change in Rincewind behaviour, now he is more serious than in his previous appearances (that is, he makes the reader laugh less than before), and as for the other mages, they are quite funny, also the god of evolution that they meet gives a good laugh because of his mistakes (notice the way he makes a ship).

Finishing, I recommend this book to anyone who likes to laugh while reading a novel. If you haven’t read any Pratchett book, than it is a good time to go the nearest books store and buy one.
